The ability to control the way information flows through networks is a critical part of security infrastructure.

There are multiple reasons why this degree of control is so valuable. It represents the most direct way to protect personally identifiable data, secure intellectual properties, and gain visibility into the overall effectiveness of the organization’s security approach.

If your organization collects personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI), or payment card information (PCI), then you probably have to follow strict rules about how you gather, store, and communicate that data within the enterprise.

If your success depends on trade secrets or other intellectual properties, then controlling the flow of information through your network is vital. At least part of the value that your organization generates is pure information – you have a clear incentive to protect it from unauthorized access.

Security Processes

If you cannot track how data is moving throughout the organization, meaningfully securing that data is near-impossible. In order to identify unauthorized users, you must establish a governance system that indicates who should have access to what data, and why.
